Stephen Gooden: The Brook Kerith - Complete Proof Set of Twelve Engravings

Engraving shown: 'Out of the Tomb' (Joseph carrying Jesus).

Illustrations for an edition of The Brook Kerith by Irish writer George Augustus Moore (1852 - 1933), published by Heinemann in 1929 in an edition of 375 copies.

The Brook Kerith is an unusual reinterpretation of the life of Christ. It tells the story that a non-divine Christ did not die on the cross, but was rescued from the tomb by Joseph of Arimathea, nursed back to health, and eventually travelled to India to find wisdom. Joseph witnesses the popularity and spread of Christianity with mixed reactions but is eventually reconciled to its ultimate good.
